William Kentridge

I designed this poster for The City College of New York, which sponsors a lecture series on “Science and Society” at their historic Harlem campus. When South African artist William Kentridge was invited to participate in a moderated conversation on his video installation The Refusal of Time (2012), a thirty-minute meditation on time and space, the complex legacies of colonialism and industry, and the artist’s own intellectual life, they asked me to design a poster to help publicize the event. Fortunately, they were able to provide me with a terrific, high-resolution photo of the installation as it had appeared at the Metropolitan Museum of Art several years earlier, which always makes my job easier. The resulting poster was displayed at the college’s campus and contributed to drawing a packed audience to the event.

A film of the original video installation can be seen here.
