Communication Design

I’m passionate about helping my clients communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively. I design websites for small business owners, corporations, and artists, working from the ground up when necessary, but using WordPress or Squarespace when they are the better solution. I design a wide variety of print collateral, including annual reports, catalogs, brochures, and newsletters, as well as books and catalogs for publishers. I’ve designed over 1,000 book covers on subjects ranging from history, military studies, and political science to religion, spirituality, and self-help. Writing and editing are as important to good communication as visuals, and I help my clients with both for their websites, social media, print collateral, and videos. I create branding and identity that is smart and complex but am happy to recommend a simple type solution if that suffices. Tying it all together, whether it’s for a book cover, an annual report, or a website, is my eye for clear and engaging creative direction.

Stefan Killen

Born and raised in Zurich, Switzerland, I have lived in New York City since 1991. I started out as a book cover designer but expanded into branding and identity, print collateral, annual reports, and websites, offering my clients project analysis, brand development, graphic design, and creative direction.

I am also a fine art photographer. My pinhole portraits and photographs of New York City are in private collections across the US, Europe, and Japan, and are included in the award-winning book Out of Focus: Pinhole Cameras and Their Pictures. My work has been exhibited at the Alan Klotz Gallery, the Center for Book Arts, and in shows juried by Molly Barnes and Larry Gagosian, and has been seen on such TV and movie sets as Girls, Creed, and Millionaires, as well as in Ian Schrager’s Clocktower restaurant in New York City. I am working on several books of my photography, including one on Walt Whitman’s poem Crossing Brooklyn Ferry. My website is at Pinhole New York.

I studied fine art at the Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA, and received a Certificate in Graphic Design at the Basel School of Design’s Basics Course with Wolfgang Weingart.
