Johnson Lowe Gallery

Last spring I was hired to design an exhibition catalog for the Johnson Lowe Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia. The catalog was to accompany the first posthumous exhibition of the prolific artist Todd Murphy (1962 - 2020) and would include sculpture, photography, and mixed media from Murphy’s Wink series (2010-2019), along with essays by cultural critics Seph Rodney and Peter Frank. The exhibit, which opened on October 8, explores issues of Black identity and labor in the South through the history of African American jockeys and the concept of the workhorse. James (Jimmy) Winkfield, the focus of the series, was the last Black jockey to win the Kentucky Derby (in 1902). It was an honor to work on this project and a delight to work with Donovan Johnson and his team at the gallery.
